What appeals to you most about living at The Atrium?

“I am enjoying sharing my life with like-minded people. I didn’t want to be a lonely old lady trapped inside her home. I like being out there, enjoying my life.

“I make good use of The Atrium’s rooftop terrace. It has become an extension of my living space. I also love sitting outside, so I spend a lot of time on my balcony just taking in that view.’’

How did you know The Atrium was for you?

“I looked at quite a few other retirement apartments but when The Atrium Lutwyche came up, I knew straight away that it was what I wanted.

“I’m still near my family and in the area I’m used to. I didn’t move away from what’s familiar.

“I really like that the Atrium is quite small with less than 60 units so it has a real community feel about it.’’

Jon Voller is a well-known Brisbane architect who over the past 10 years has been involved in designing several major retirement living and aged-care projects with leading seniors living and aged care global firm, Marchese Partners. Jon and his wife Lyndal chose The Atrium Lutwyche for their home.

“I knew exactly what I was getting into here (The Atrium Lutwyche). After 10 years of working for a variety of providers in the seniors’ living sector you realise what are the things you should look for in a project.

“I was also attracted by The Atrium’s pricing structure, its location and its size with only 59 apartments. I looked deeper into the way Aura Holdings operates and the charges and what as a resident you might gain or enjoy as part of the Aura family. I prepared a matrix that included several of the well-known developers and managers of retirement living villages. When I looked at all the figures it was a ‘tick-tick’ for Aura and The Atrium.

“I’m very happy living here and, as an architect, I’ve always loved the idea of having this sort of view of the city. We did enjoy that kind of view at St Lucia for a while in an apartment but it wasn’t as magnificent as this … and it didn’t have this 35sq m balcony. Living here for a year now none of the feelings that made me want to come here have diminished or been compromised.

“My feeling is that some people want to live in suburbia and they see Lutwyche as being just too urban. Yet that’s exactly one of the reasons why I am living here – I like the urban edginess it has. Life in the suburbs is not me now. I can walk down and get milk or the paper and it’s just 300m away to all those shops and services.’’

Have you always lived in the area?

“I’ve lived nearby in Clayfield for the past 20 years but it’s all become too much. I really wanted to downsize – who wants to continue cleaning the family home with its five bedrooms and three toilets? The Atrium is a fresh start for me.’’

What appeals to you most about living at The Atrium?

“The lack of maintenance, really. I’m able to whiz around the whole apartment with my stick vacuum in 15 minutes. I know if anything goes wrong at The Atrium, I don’t have to look after the maintenance myself.

“I also love the openness of my fifth-floor apartment. When you walk in the front door the whole unit is glass out to the balcony and the view is there. That’s what sold me.’’
