Feeling energetic? Take your pick of walks around the Mt Coot-tha Reserve, including the walk to popular Slaughter Falls. There are several picnic spots to make a day of it. Take in the stunning Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens on the way up.

2. Taylor-made bridge

The Walter Taylor Bridge opened in 1936 as the only habitable bridge in the southern hemisphere. The sight of washing hanging on the line outside the art deco towers at either of the bridge had long fascinated motorists. It was home to the tollkeeper’s family and a tenant, with the Indooroopilly end tower occupied until 2009.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary at Fig Tree Pocket on 18 hectares is the largest koala sanctuary in the world. Cuddle a koala or hand-feed free-roaming kangaroos. Get close to all manner of native animals and reptiles. The sanctuary is easily accessed by car, bus or river cruise from South Bank.

4. Rock it at the park

One of the city’s most popular parks is the Rocks Riverside Park at Seventeen Mile Rocks. The former quarry site has been transformed into a wonderland where the grandkids can swing and climb to their own point of exhaustion. There’s plenty of spots riverside for a picnic lunch.
