Indian Buffet Fundraiser Brings Community Together for a Wonderful Cause with a Huge Impact
Thanks to the vision, generosity and initiative of residents Mary and Trevor Read, friends, family, neighbours and residents recently came together for a vibrant and heartwarming evening at Sankalp Indian Restaurant for a sold-out Indian Buffet Fundraiser supporting Rose and Susanna in India.
The event raised more than $3,500, enough to entirely cover one girl’s full year of education and expenses. An incredible achievement and a powerful reflection of what a community can achieve.
A total of 63 people attended the evening, which was held to support Rose and Susanna through nursing college. Trevor and Mary have lovingly supported the two young women since they were babies, making the cause especially meaningful.
Guests enjoyed a generous and delicious Indian buffet, with many commenting on the exceptional quality of both the food and service. Beyond raising funds, the evening created a wonderful opportunity for people to connect, laugh and share a memorable night together.
The thought, care and attention to detail that went into the fundraiser were evident throughout. Activities included an Indian trivia quiz for adults, elephant colouring and quizzes for children, a stall featuring Indian-inspired scarves and items, an extensive lucky dip and door prize collection, and a raffle featuring a stunning watercolour painting by talented resident artist, Frances.
Frances’ artwork, a beautiful painting of the iconic Maroochy River Fishing Shed, raised well over $500 in raffle ticket sales before the event even began and was a highlight of the evening. In a lovely twist, Frances drew the winning ticket herself from a bowl overflowing with entries. The winner was Lorna, who had spent weeks sourcing prizes and supporting the fundraiser, a moment many described as perfect karma.

A special mention must also go to Lorna, who approached numerous Sunshine Coast businesses to secure an incredible range of prizes for the lucky dip. Guests could donate $10 to select a surprise gift, with prizes ranging from restaurant and café vouchers to hairdressing services, car washes and even one prize valued at $399. Thanks to her efforts, every attendee left with a prize or gift and the fundraiser dollars kept increasing!
The event was also supported by the wider community, with many residents contributing behind the scenes, volunteering on the night, donating funds even if they couldn’t attend, and providing raffle prizes. Mary and Trevor’s granddaughters, Lucy and Jasmine, added a special touch by welcoming guests with personalised name tags on arrival.
Mary also shared heartfelt updates and messages from Rose and Susanna during the evening, reminding everyone of the genuine and lasting impact the fundraiser will have on their futures.
To top off the celebrations, the ladies from the restaurant performed a lively dance that had the whole room clapping along and smiling.
More than just a fundraiser, the evening was a beautiful example of community spirit in action, of people coming together with generosity, kindness and purpose to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Following this wonderful success, conversations are already underway about another fundraiser later this year. Mary and Trevor are well on track to achieve their goal of fully supporting both girls for an entire year, a beautiful vision made possible by the power of community.
