Aura Holdings Trades Density for Greenspace at Landmark Lutwyche Site

Aura Holdings recently acquired the former Fancutts Tennis Centre site at 39 Laura Street, Lutwyche, from RetireAustralia, adding a landmark inner-Brisbane location to its rapidly growing portfolio of premium retirement communities. The acquisition marked a full-circle moment for Aura’s founders, Tim Russell and Mark Taylor, who previously co-founded and led RetireAustralia, Australia’s largest privately owned retirement village operator, before establishing Aura Holdings in 2016.

Aura submitted a Development Application to Brisbane City Council last Friday, reducing the number of apartments from 265 down to 130. The revised design allows for significantly more greenspace across the site, creating a more open, landscaped setting for future residents.

Aura Holdings Chief Executive Officer, Sean Graham stated “the reduction in density reflects Aura’s commitment to delivering retirement communities that prioritise community, liveability and amenity over scale.”

The additional greenspace will provide residents with landscaped gardens and outdoor areas that encourage connection, recreation, and an active lifestyle, while also softening the development’s presence within the surrounding Lutwyche streetscape.

“Securing the Fancutts site is a significant milestone for Aura,” said Mr Graham.

“This is a rare opportunity to deliver a genuinely unique retirement living option in Lutwyche, an established, tightly held inner-city location with a rich local history and a growing need for age-appropriate housing. We’re looking forward to giving this much loved site a new chapter as a retirement community and enables locals to remain in their community.”

The site was previously home to the world-renowned Fancutts Tennis Centre, established by champion tennis players Trevor and Daphne Fancutt, which hosted tennis legends including Rod Laver, Pat Rafter and Pat Cash over the decades. The Fancutt family has expressed its support for the site’s transformation into a retirement community, noting the pleasing symmetry of the site’s legacy of community and connection continuing into its next stage of life.

Once complete, the development will meet growing demand for retirement living in Lutwyche and its surrounds, an area forecast to see strong growth in its senior population and will support Brisbane City Council’s goal of increasing housing options for older residents.

The acquisition adds to Aura’s expanding South-East Queensland pipeline, which includes villages in various stages of development across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.
