Somerset Indooroopilly Pétanque Club: Building Community Through Friendly Competition

At Somerset Indooroopilly, community life is shaped by shared interests, meaningful connections, and opportunities for residents to stay active and engaged. One of the most successful examples of this is the growing popularity of the Somerset Pétanque Club, a resident-led initiative that has quickly become a valued part of village life.

From fundraising efforts and coaching sessions to seasonal competitions and community gatherings, the Somerset Pétanque Club reflects the strong sense of camaraderie that defines the Somerset community.

What is Petanque?

Pétanque is a social and accessible French game, often compared to boules or lawn bowls, where players aim to throw metal balls as close as possible to a smaller target ball known as the “jack.”

The game is easy to learn, suitable for all skill levels, and encourages both gentle physical activity and social interaction. Because of its relaxed pace and inclusive nature, petanque has become increasingly popular within retirement living communities around the world.

At Somerset Indooroopilly, the game has evolved into far more than a recreational activity — it has become a community tradition.

How the Somerset Petanque Club Began

Interest in pétanque first emerged among Somerset residents shortly after the opening of Stage 1. Several residents expressed enthusiasm for introducing the game to village life, with conversations taking place between residents, the Somerset Resident Social Committee (SRC), and village management.

In August 2024, resident Wendy Armitage took the initiative to formally progress the idea by working alongside Somerset Manager Kymn Collins and experienced pétanque player Graeme McDowall to develop a proposal for the construction of a dedicated pétanque piste.

To help bring the vision to life, Wendy organised a series of resident quiz nights and fundraising activities. Through the enthusiasm of residents, strong community support, and the backing of Aura Holdings, the pétanque piste was officially constructed between the Stage 1 and Stage 2 buildings.

The project quickly became an example of what can be achieved when residents collaborate to create activities that enrich village life.

Growing Participation and Community Spirit

In April 2025, Graeme McDowall led a series of coaching sessions designed to introduce residents to the game and help build confidence among new players. The sessions were well attended and generated strong interest across the community.

These coaching events laid the foundation for the inaugural Somerset Winter Petanque Competition — a round robin tournament featuring fourteen teams divided into two groups.

The official grand opening of the piste was held in May 2025 and celebrated with a friendly match between Team Somerset Residents and Team Somerset Management. Management secured the win, but the day itself was defined by laughter, participation, and strong community engagement.

Throughout the season, the competition continued to attract players, spectators, and supporters from across the village. Residents embraced the social nature of the game, with sportsmanship and friendship becoming central themes of the competition.

The 2025 Winter Competition Grand Final

The Somerset Petanque Club concluded its first official winter season with a well-attended Grand Final and community BBQ in September 2025.

Despite challenging windy conditions, Graeme and Ian secured a close victory over Wendy and Bruce with a final score of 11–9 in an exciting championship match.

The event included prize presentations, afternoon tea, and a gathering in the Somerset café, where residents came together to celebrate the success of the season. Kymn Collins generously presented prizes to participants, including a new competition trophy donated by resident Lesley and a bottle of champagne for the runners-up.

The afternoon highlighted everything the club has come to represent at Somerset Indooroopilly — connection, participation, encouragement, and community spirit.

Why Petanque Has Become So Popular at Somerset

The success of the Somerset Petanque Club reflects the many benefits that social and recreational activities bring to retirement living communities.

Easy to Learn and Inclusive

One of the key reasons for the club’s growth is the accessibility of the game. Residents of all experience levels can participate, making it easy for new players to get involved and enjoy the social atmosphere.

Encourages Social Connection

Petanque naturally brings people together. Whether playing competitively, spectating, or attending social events connected to the club, residents have created new friendships and strengthened existing relationships.

Supports Active Living

While gentle in nature, petanque still encourages movement, coordination, and time outdoors — all important aspects of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.

Builds Community Engagement

The club has become a community-driven initiative where residents actively contribute ideas, organise events, and support one another. From fundraising quiz nights to seasonal competitions, the activity has strengthened the sense of belonging within the village.

Looking Ahead: Summer Ladder Competition and Future Seasons

Following the success of the 2025 Winter Competition, organisers Wendy and Graeme are now planning a summer ladder competition in preparation for the 2026 winter season.

With growing participation and increasing spectator interest, the Somerset Petanque Club continues to evolve as one of the village’s most successful resident-led activities.

The club’s journey demonstrates how shared interests can help create meaningful experiences, foster wellbeing, and build lasting community connections within retirement living.
