Why Moving Sooner Could Be the Best Decision You Make After 60

Many people put off thinking about their “next move” until circumstances force their hand. At our recent Inspired Living: Real Advice for Your Next Move event, held at Somerset Indooroopilly, our expert panel reminded us that the best time to plan is well before you have to.

When you make the choice sooner rather than later, you give yourself the gift of freedom, confidence and the chance to enjoy more of what matters.

Here’s what our experts shared:

Plan ahead: Protecting your future in retirement. Danielle Lim, Lawyer.

One of the most overlooked but essential steps is making sure your legal affairs are in order. Danielle explained that:

  • A valid Will ensures your wishes are carried out and avoids unnecessary disputes.
  • Powers of Attorney are crucial so that trusted people can make decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to.
  • Understanding contracts and retirement living agreements upfront provides certainty and reduces stress later.

Her advice was clear: don’t wait until there’s a crisis. Putting these measures in place early offers peace of mind for you and your family.

Downsizing is easier when you start early. Susie Dash, Downsizing expert.

For many, the idea of sorting through a lifetime of possessions is overwhelming, but Susie encouraged everyone to see it as an opportunity rather than a burden. She shared:

  • Start small, even just one drawer or cupboard at a time.
  • Focus on what adds value to your current lifestyle, not what once did.
  • Consider passing on heirlooms or unused items now, so you can enjoy seeing them appreciated.
  • Tackling the process gradually means less pressure later and more enjoyment of your new home.

Residents in the audience nodded along, with many saying that letting go of items they have accumulated over the years was surprisingly liberating.

Lifestyle first, not the property market. Paris Arthur, Real Estate expert.

A common hesitation is waiting for the “perfect” time to sell or buy. Paris reminded guests that lifestyle should always take priority over market timing. Key points included:

  • Many who move earlier find they can travel, socialise and embrace new hobbies without the ongoing worries of a large home.
  • Markets move up and down, but your quality of life shouldn’t wait.
  • Moving while you’re healthy and active allows you to take full advantage of your new community.

The right time is when you’re ready to enjoy the freedom of a lower-maintenance, well-located home.

How Aura supports your financial peace of mind. Mark Taylor, Aura Holdings Director.

When it comes to downsizing, the financial details are often what give people pause, but Mark Taylor advised you can feel confident choosing Aura because their approach is built for fairness and transparency. Here’s how Aura makes a difference:

  • When you move into an Aura village, you don’t pay stamp duty. That’s an immediate cost saving compared to many other lifestyle or residential options.
  • Unlike many operators, Aura’s Deferred Management Fee (DMF) is calculated on the exit sale price, not the original purchase price and capped at a maximum of 33%. This means you and your family benefit from the majority of any capital gains when you leave.
  • When it’s time to leave, you and your family won’t be charged for refurbishment (reinstatement) or sales and marketing costs. Aura covers those.

Words from residents who’ve made the move

Hearing from those already enjoying life in their new community often says more than any expert could:

“We’ve joined the book club, barbecues, and happy hours. There’s always something happening if you want to be involved.” – Elaine

“Moving here gave me freedom. I can just close the door and go. It’s such a generous community, you laugh every day.” – Iris

“The facilities here are better than anywhere else. We use the pool, gym, gardens, and library all the time.” – Ross

The Takeaway

The message from our experts and residents is the same: don’t wait until you have to make the move into retirement living. By acting sooner, you’ll reduce the stress of downsizing, stay in control of your decisions with clear guidance, and give yourself more time to enjoy the independence, friendships and lifestyle of village life.
