Non-golfers find lifestyle suits them to a tee

Living beside a golf course might be a dream come true for golfers but there’s still lots of appeal for Aura Holdings’ residents who have no interest in the game.

The first residents began moving into Somerset Indooroopilly within Brisbane’s Indooroopilly Golf Club in December 2021, while The Ninth Middle Ridge at the Toowoomba Golf Club is due for completion before the end of 2022. The majority of our residents and deposit-holders are not golfers but appreciate the many benefits of living in such a beautiful, peaceful and green space surrounded by friendly, like-minded people.

So what were the driving forces for our non-golfing residents?

The Ninth Middle Ridge

Helen Repin describes herself as a very independent country girl who loves wide open spaces. Helen says she has found her perfect retirement home at The Ninth Middle Ridge where she is looking forward to savouring sunsets and views of the horizon.

“I’ve recently come off a small acreage block with a large garden near Armidale. It was gorgeous but too much work, hence the change. I also wanted to move to Toowoomba to be near family and friends.’’

Golf wasn’t a drawcard for Helen. “There are many other advantages to The Ninth Middle Ridge. I am definitely not a golfer and when I had a very demanding career, working six days a week, I never had time to take up golf. However, I have friends who are keen golfers and are members of the Toowoomba Golf Club so they are already planning to call in for a coffee after their game.’’

The display apartment now open at The Ninth Middle Ridge, Toowoomba; and Somerset Indooroopilly stage one.

At The Ninth, Helen placed a deposit on a three-bedroom apartment tucked in a corner that will provide her with the privacy she craves.

“I didn’t want to live somewhere looking out on paling fences or other people’s washing flapping on their line. I did look at other retirement living options but if they overlooked roofs, or had pools and bowling greens, I drove straight out the gate! That’s not for me,’’ she says.

“I really need a feeling of space and peacefulness, and to see the horizon. I will get all that from the Toowoomba Golf Course. I also knew that the suburb of Middle Ridge was in a very nice part of Toowoomba.’’

Helen is keenly awaiting the end the year when she can move into her apartment at The Ninth.

Somerset Indooroopilly

Carmel Caspari and Helen Whiteley have become good friends after moving into golfside living at Somerset Indooroopilly in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

Carmel (pictured below) says golf never really interested her. “I only played for about a month when I was around 30 and quickly decided it wasn’t for me. But living beside the Indooroopilly Golf Course provides a nice green outlook and it’s so peaceful – you certainly don’t have to be into golf. Actually, I have never even overheard a golf discussion here and I don’t know too many of the other residents who play golf.

“I love the fact that when I wake up in the morning, I see the trees out to the east and the sun is coming in. We’ve got everything here with all the facilities. I can’t think of anything they are not offering to make me comfortable and peaceful.

“I really love our apartments too. I actually love the smaller size and can whip through and do all my housework, including washing the floors, in under an hour. In my old house it would take me a good four hours to go right through.

“The other residents are all much the same, we’ve all travelled and had interesting lives. In our conversations it’s surprising what comes up and to find out what people have done in their lives. And we always seem to find a reason to have a wine!

“I also feel totally secure and really safe. I couldn’t be happier – it was the best decision I could have taken. I love it, just love it.’’

Helen Whiteley (pictured below) admits she is also not the least bit interested in golf, but her daughter and son-in-law – who are also residents of Somerset Indooroopilly – are keen golfers and members of the golf club.

“We have a beautiful outlook from our apartments with all the open space that the golf course provides. It’s particularly peaceful at night, there’s no noise at all,’’ Helen says.

“It’s also nice to be so near the golf clubhouse and when friends visit I ask ‘would you like to have lunch at the golf club’s restaurant?’ and the answer is always ‘oh yes, we’d love to go’.

“When new people move in here they quickly become our friends. It really is a wonderful place to live. I wake up every morning with a smile on my face because I’ve got no worries at all.

“You definitely don’t need to be a golfer. And you wouldn’t need to be a golfer to live at The Ninth Middle Ridge either. I know that part of Toowoomba well and it is really lovely on top of the range.’’
