Crafty residents touched by plight of koalas

The plight of koalas in the devastating bushfires has touched the hearts of residents of a retirement community in Brisbane’s southwest who sprang into action launching Operation Koala Cuddles.

PRESS RELEASE Friday, 29 November 2019

The plight of koalas in the devastating bushfires has touched the hearts of residents of a retirement community in Brisbane’s southwest who sprang into action launching Operation Koala Cuddles.

Sewing machines have been whirring as the crafty residents of the Kingsford Terrace village at Corinda created dozens of pouches for injured koalas and other wildlife in their recovery.

The residents were inundated last week after they put out a call for the public to gather up their unwanted towels, pillowcases and sheets for use by wildlife carers. The residents have been using some of the donated materials to produce the cuddle pouches.

The pouches and donated materials will be delivered to the RSPCA at Wacol where they will be distributed to carers supporting injured koalas and wildlife in their recovery.

Kingsford Terrace Village Manager Rachel Manson said the callout for materials for the koala rescue had been a huge success. “We received an entire roomful of donations,’’ she said.

“Our residents have been saddened to witness the distressing images of injured koalas and other wildlife and wanted to help. They began donating their excess towels and linen, then the village decided to act as a collection point for the local community to drop off their items. With so much material provided our lovely residents began sewing pouches.’’

Donations of towels and sheets are still being received Mon-Fri 9am to 3.30pm at the village’s reception at 260 Cliveden Avenue, Corinda.
